Thursday, July 20, 2017 – VAC – “Venice Art Crawl” – HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

veniceartcrawl.com
VAC – “Venice Art Crawl”
Their mission statement is: “The Venice Art Crawl’s mission is to foster and reinvigorate the creativity that has historically and currently makes Venice such a vibrant and dynamic community. Our goal is to share, inspire and promote collaboration within the Venice community through mixers and art events. We are an all volunteer run non-profit organization.” [It’s organized by the Venice Chamber of Commerce, and at first glance, no idea of what it’s worth, but as we all know, the Boardwalk and Venice in general are pretty cool places, so we decided to do the footwork, and see what’s on…]
http://www.veniceartcrawl.com [the website is, to say the least, extremely uninformative, all it will tell you is is that Mission Statement and that it’s July 20, 2017 and that the next one is September 21. Where? At what time? Mystery!
But there is a 7.5 MB PDF map of all participating venues [who paid $25 to be on that map]. Sure, if you are on a phone, let’s hope you haven’t exhausted your 4G allotment for the month! It can be found here:
http://www.veniceartcrawl.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/VACMap_July20_2017_Web.pdf
That PDF reveals the secrets, and all events have a banner that will show you they are VAC – open to the public. Most events are 6-9pm or so going into 10pm and 11pm for some, with some “After-Party” to 2 AM, a rare thing for LA – as we sure aren’t in Paris or Rome, where things *start* at 9pm or 10pm…
There are 3 “clusters” [Cluster 1] around the Venice and Pacific (about 5-6-7 events) and Pacific and Windward intersections (about 7 or so).
Map for Cluster 1: https://www.google.com/maps/place/55+N+Venice+Blvd,+Venice,+CA+90291/@33.9848925,-118.4728242,17z
Map for Cluster 2: https://www.google.com/maps/place/1516+Pacific+Ave,+Venice,+CA+90291/@33.9879831,-118.4744856,17z
Unfortunately, it would take like two more hours of work at least to create a mobile-friendly text listing for everything, so unless you have WiFi AND a printer, and want to download the PDF and print it, you are a bit out of luck. Fortunately, it’s extremely probable [unless they really, really are extremely badly organized!] that if you go to one of the 3 clusters listed and mapped here at 6 pm or slightly before, you will find printed brochures listing all venues. There is a total of 25 venues listed on the PDF, of course 5 or 10 are just coffee shops or restaurants looking for business but more than 15 are genuine art openings, receptions and parties.
The one that feels the coolest is a 6-10pm “Park Place Block Party” [Cluster 3] with like 7 venues which seems particularly in, and here is the map for it [Park Place is a little side street next to the Abbot Kinney and Main intersection]:
Map for Cluster 3: https://www.google.com/maps/place/112+Park+Pl,+Venice,+CA+90291/@33.9922408,-118.4773005,17z
The Park Place Block Party indicates “Imperfect Produce” as their sponsor, which is a “produce delivery service on a mission to reduce food waste. We work directly with farmers to purchase produce that cannot be sold at conventional grocery stores because of rejection due to sizing, shape, coloration, and overall aesthetic imperfections”. First time we ever hear of them, but how cool is that?! So we tracked their website, here: https://www.imperfectproduce.com/ and http://www.imperfectproduce.com/faq.php 510-595-668. Apparently you can get 7-9 pounds of produce for $11 a week for conventional, or $15 for organic. Not bad! They are active in the Bay Area, L.A. and Orange County.
It took us an hour’s work to figure all this for you, but by now it’s clear that going to Venice on July 20 definitely is the thing to do for anyone who’s into the Arts! That’s so true that in fact, we are going to have to forget about that nice VIP and Media Reception for Val Kilmer! 😦

Bergamot Station's Summer Celebration
  • Saturday, July 22, 2017
  • 11:00am  4:00pm and a few parties after that.

We are pleased to share the good news that the galleries and creative businesses at Bergamot Station are here to stay! Join Bergamot Station Arts Center for their annual Summer Celebration event, Saturday, July 22nd from 1 pm- 5 pm. This is an unparalleled arts and community celebration in Santa Monica! Bergamot Station is an internationally renowned creative arts complex, boasting over 40 galleries and creative businesses. The Summer Celebration highlights gallery exhibitions and brings together live music, local vendors and special events. Come enjoy a thriving arts community gathering! This is a FREE family friendly event! There are no tickets necessary to gain admission. It is highly encouraged that attendees will carpool or ride-share to get to the event. There is limited parking at Bergamot Station. Take the Metro! The Expo stop is onsite at the exit 26th Street/Bergamot.

We are grateful to the Santa Monica City Council for affirming that the art galleries are integral to the cultural life of the city and should remain here into the future. The City Council voted overwhelmingly to approve a plan that will retain the galleries at Bergamot Station and add new cultural uses, including spaces for a museum, community arts center, performing arts, and other non-profits. The galleries consider this a great victory and look forward to working with the new arts organizations to shape the future of Bergamot Station Arts Center!

We will soon have a preview link for next week, plus all the links for the whole month of June 2017, allowing you easy access to all on-going exhibitions, at a glance :

July-Week1 July-Week2 July-Week3
June-Week5 June-Week4 June-Week3 June-Week2 June-Week1

Click the following buttons to access other useful internal links:

Access the LAartinfo Main Site
Access the LAartinfo “MindTools” sub-site Gateway Page
Access the “You Are What You Eat” sub-site Gateway Page

Further, here are links to access the Gateway Pages for cutting-edge material on various more technical subjects: Investing in Art – Why and How, or “Art Invest” [in construction]; LA Art Residencies or “LA Art Reside” [in construction]; 3D Printing – A general Introduction with the Art Community in mind, or “3DP Intro”; 3D Printing and Art, or “3DP Art”; Geopolymers Introduction, or “GeoPol Intro”; GeoPolymers and Art, or “GeoPol Art”. Please notice that these two last subjects tend to overlap somewhat, at least how we see it, and should preferably be looked at jointly at the same time:

ART INVEST LA ART RESIDE
3DP INTRO 3DP ART GEOPOL INTRO GEOPOL ART

We have quite some material pertaining to all this which slowly accumulated over the years, mostly original material which we have decided to share. However, editing the whole for consistency, and building up the corresponding pages will take a little bit of time. Further Gateway Pages on other cutting-edge subjects are contemplated. For example a page currently contemplated but not yet really worked on is “VR ART”, that is, “ART and VIRTUAL REALITY”.
