Los Angeles Art Parties – 2017week36 – 170903-170910 – SeptWeek1

ART PARTIES & ART EVENTS IN L.A. for 2017

[WEEK 17-36] – 170903-170910 – SeptWeek1

https://laartinfo.wordpress.com/2017/08/28/los-angeles-art-parties-2017week36-170903-170910/   or as a shortlink   http://wp.me/p8gGTo-mq

All parties and receptions are free to attend, except when otherwise noted (and we list very few paid events, as we believe that fairness requires paid events should pay to be advertised!). This is the most comprehensive listing in existence, and creating it and checking everything takes about 40 hours a week… In general, the week’s listing is 70-75% complete by Tuesday, and 95+% to 99% complete by Thursday or Friday, but it is constantly updated!  Enjoy!

At first this week at first definitely looked like purely a Bergamot Station Week!  So most will want to set their Saturday afternoon and evening apart for that! But in fact, things are almost as rich in the Culver City Arts District and in the wider DTLA Art District. A bit of coordination wouldn’t hurt!  We made three special sub-pages, to the benefit of whomever wishes to focus on one specific Art District.

Everything is here, but for your convenience we also made 3 special sub-pages: Bergamot and Santa Monica is here:  http://wp.me/p8gGTo-nC  Culver City here: http://wp.me/p8gGTo-nF   and DTLA here:  http://wp.me/p8gGTo-nH

Born in 1951 in Glendale, CA, James hd Brown relocated with his family to #Oaxaca, #Mexico in 1995 where he founded Carpe Diem Press. Collaborating with Gabriel and Judith Quintas of Linotípográfica Quintas, Brown creates limited edition artists’ books featuring the work of influential artists from the United States and Mexico. He often includes original prints made by the artists to be inserted in the books themselves. Some of the artists included in the #CarpeDiem series are #JoanJonas, #GracielaIturbide, #KikiSmith, and #FranciscoToledo. Brown will be producing a new book with Graciela Iturbide especially for Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA. Brown’s exhibition will also feature his “My Other House” series, begun in 2009 and worked on continuously since then. The idea for this project came to Brown after his two sons, while living “in a forgotten house in the wildness of Mexico, somewhere outside of Oaxaca” discovered a staircase leading to an “almost secret” mezzanine. Nobody else was allowed access to this place, a sanctuary that the boys called “my other house”. “My Other House” is a metaphor for that imaginative space essential to living a creative life. Works from this series, along with Carpe Diem Press books will be installed in the four main galleries at Fisher. Fisher Museum is the only Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA partner featuring an exhibition dedicated to an LA-born expatriate artist. Brown has lived and worked in Mexico for the past 22 years, and Fisher’s exhibition will demonstrate his ongoing creative dialogue and exchange with Mexican art, artists, and culture. "James hd Brown: Life and Work in Mexico" is part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles, taking place from September 2017 through January 2018 at more than 70 cultural institutions across Southern California. USC Fisher Museum of Art thanks @Farrowandball for supporting "James hd Brown: Life and Work in Mexico" with their generous contribution of paint, used as an essential design element for the “Carpe Diem Press” section of the exhibition. ____ @pstinla #PSTLALA #upcoming

This competes big time with what is going on at the same time in Culver City [15 receptions in essentially a 2 hours time frame] and in DTLA! One can’t help but come to the conclusion that the people engaged in the Art Trade in Los Angeles and particularly Art Galleries are in need of a bit of help when it comes to coordinating their marketing efforts.  The Bergamot Station and Santa Monica Cluster of events has also been given its own page this week, which you can find here: https://laartinfo.wordpress.com/2017/09/07/los-angeles-art-parties-2017week36-bergamot-santa-monica-170909-special/ or as a shortlink: http://wp.me/p8gGTo-nC

Bruce Cohen

  • Saturday, September 9, 2017
  • 5:00pm  7:00pm

Leslie Sacks Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles based artist, Bruce Cohen. Cohen’s alluring interiors and exquisite still lifes continue to captivate in his new body of work. The exhibition will feature a dozen paintings, most on canvas and some on wood panel, ranging in scale from 16 x 16 inches up to 48 x 72 inches.

Bruce Cohen’s singular aesthetic is immediately distinguishable in its refined realism. He has explored the genres of interior and still life paintings for decades, yet his output always feels new and fresh. Nodding to the old masters and his passion for art history, he successfully summons a contemporary feel by way of a polished, yet punchy palette with an almost surreal compression of the picture plane. He executes a mastery of subject matter to his advantage and constantly perfects his painting to stunning effects. Cohen’s motivation and inspiration culminates in an unhurried and meticulous rendering. Similar to artists like Jasper Johns and Jim Dine, who use a lexicon of repeated images as a visual vocabulary, Cohen revisits themes and objects (flowers, vases, books, window sills) finding endless arrangements. Stylistically the work’s central focus of everyday objects found in daily life connects them to the Dutch masters of the 17th century, from whom Cohen derives great influence and inspiration.
