L.A. Art Parties, Receptions, Openings, Events – 2018week38 – 180917-180923

ART PARTIES, ART OPENINGS, ART RECEPTIONS, OPEN ART STUDIOS & ART EVENTS in L.A. & SoCAL for 2018

[WEEK 18-38] – 180917-180923 – SeptWeek4

All parties and receptions are free to attend, except when otherwise noted (and we list very few paid events, as we believe that fairness requires paid events should pay to be advertised!). This is the most comprehensive listing in existence, and creating it and checking everything takes about 40 hours a week… In general, the week’s listing is 70-75% complete by Tuesday, and 95+% to 99% complete by Thursday or Friday, but it is constantly updated! Enjoy!

OF INTEREST TO ARTISTS AND THE ART SCENE:   With Microsoft just announced efforts, Mixed Reality “Holograms”, or rather, 3D-Scanning and “Volumetric Capture” are on their way to going (almost) mainstream, and this will have some significant impact on Art and Artists… Read more here:

The apex of a reflection over Art and Society that stretched 50 years and three continents, Laart Info is the non-profit effort that brings you the totally uncurated and most complete listing of Art Openings, Art Receptions, Art Parties, Open Studios and Art Events in Los Angeles and SoCal, which you can currently find at https://laartinfo.wordpress.com

Over two years ago in 2015, we started a process of systematically attending and documenting Openings and other such events, personally attending over 500 receptions each year. This put us in front of between 10,000 and 20,000 pieces of art freshly put up for sale every year at the very moment they reached the market, for prices stating at two figures and stretching into seven and, with Jeff Koonz, even eight figures. Let’s note here that in an increasingly competitive and globalized world, we are firm believers in the irreplaceable role of Art Galleries and Art Curators.

Please note: A friend of Daniel, Larry Gilbert has started an art centric website packed with L.A. and National art news, views and interviews. Find it at http://artnowla.com . You  should take the time to check it out. You will be wiser for it.

Karl Burkheimer: “Tautline” – Beginning first as architectural interventions built with common construction materials, the gallery space will be a laboratory that allows for a call and response style of mark-making and surface treatment. Over the course of several weeks LAVC students will have the opportunity to participate in a collective art process through contributing imagery, text, gestures and marks to the facades of these works. The artist will respond, by further manipulating and integrating those contributions.

WENDELL DAYTON, pioneer of “8R Art” and National Treasure, on show at Blum & Poe, Los Angeles from June 30 to August 18, 2018.

Wendell Dayton, arguably a “National Treasure” for his pioneering work in “8R Art” (where each “R” stands for “Re-Using, Re-purposing, Recycling, etc) was born in Spokane, WA in 1938. He lives and works in the San Fernando Valley, just outside of Los Angeles, CA. His comprehensive 80th Anniversary exhibition from June 30 to August 18, 2018 at Blum and Poe – Los Angeles, one of the topmost leading gallery in Contemporary Art in the country, follows the recent acquisition of his work by LACMA [Los Angeles County Museum of Art]. In other words, Wendell Dayton “made it” as much as any artist can “make it”.

The stainless steel sculptures in the exhibition span six decades of the artist’s opus. They populate the entirety of the downstairs and upstairs galleries at Blum and Poe, and spread into the outdoor gardens.

The Blum and Poe press release shares the following details: “Upon completing his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Indiana University in 1960, Dayton hitchhiked his way to New York City to embark on his life as an artist. Living in a series of lofts on Bleecker and the Bowery, he met and worked alongside artists associated with the Park Place Group, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop, among them James Rosenquist, Robert Grosvenor, Claes Oldenburg, and Mark di Suvero. Beginning with painting and street rubbings, he soon graduated to larger constructions, eventually incorporating welding and materials such as steel, painted wood, and found items. Dayton made a living as a guard at the Whitney Museum and as a maintenance painter at the Museum of Modern Art, eventually relocating in 1972 to Los Angeles, all the while developing a growing body of large-scale sculptural work.

For the past two decades, Dayton’s studio has resided on a two-acre plot at the far edge of the San Fernando Valley [that reminds anyone knowing the two of some of the aspects of Jirayr Zorthian’s ranch]. Amidst a sprawling rural landscape, the property is a dusty field peppered with twelve-foot shimmering sculptures, some resting in the dry bed of a pale blue swimming pool nested in the center of the plot. His works range from small-scale pieces detailed with bright splashes of auto retouching paint to stark, monumental stainless steel structures that nod to David Smith, Alexander Calder, and John Chamberlain. These industrial materials are hard and severe—each work manipulated by Dayton for months on end by gantries, plasma cutters, pipe benders, and welding machines—meant to endure the elements and time. Shapes cut from steel, spliced curling metal pipes, and the parts of a dismembered drill press meet in these totemic compositions and seem to effortlessly rise from the ground toward the sky. Dayton transmutes these crude mediums into graceful abstracted forms, welded gestures representing the birth of a child, lovers lost, and the celestial bodies above.”

It is truly a pleasure to see so seminal a work in “8R Art” finally fully recognized by authorities as incontestable as LACMA and Blum and Poe. What is important, however, is that Wendell Dayton’s exemplary work does not remain an isolated peak, like, arguably, the one Jirayr Zorthian once produced, but gives birth to a following, a “school”. Our world produces innumerable materials that can be transcended into Art, and this is precisely what Wendell Dayton demonstrated and illustrated in the most magisterial of ways.

In any event, if you want to experience by yourself what can be done with recycled and repurposed metals, you need to swing by Blum and Poe before August 18th, 2018. The gallery is located 2727 S. La Cienega, Los Angeles CA 90034, and open Tuesday – Saturday, 10 AM – 6 PM.

Further, here are links to access the Gateway Pages for cutting-edge material on various more technical subjects: Investing in Art – Why and How, or “Art Invest” [in construction]; LA Art Residencies or “LA Art Reside” [in construction]; 3D Printing – A general Introduction with the Art Community in mind, or “3DP Intro”; 3D Printing and Art, or “3DP Art”; Geopolymers Introduction, or “GeoPol Intro”; GeoPolymers and Art, or “GeoPol Art”. Please notice that these two last subjects tend to overlap somewhat, at least how we see it, and should preferably be looked at jointly at the same time:

We have quite some material pertaining to all this which slowly accumulated over the years, mostly original material which we have decided to share. However, editing the whole for consistency, and building up the corresponding pages will take a little bit of time. Further Gateway Pages on other cutting-edge subjects are contemplated. For example a page currently contemplated but not yet really worked on is “VR ART”, that is, “ART and VIRTUAL REALITY”.

ARTISTS, GALLERIES, ENTREPRENEURS, COLLECTORS AND MUSEUMS ARE *CREATORS*.

The present series of sites is in construction, with a target of large scale public release in January 2018. The present page will serve as gateway to sub-sites and pages dedicated to specific issues exploring the Philosophy and Praxis of Art, as well as Poiesis-related subjects such as:   Embracing Poiesis. Personal Empowerment. Creativity. Art Making and Making Art. Creating and Making. Interfacing with others (Public Relations, Promotion, Marketing, Social Engineering, etc). Tools for Artistic and Poietic Expression. Old and New Materials and Techniques for Artistic Creation and Art-making. Etc.

As well as, in general, anything relating to Poiesis and Empowerment, such as:

Definition Pages – People very often use words without being really aware of what they are exactly saying, or what the concept they are using truly and really mean.  Such fuzzy thinking can be very disempowering. To the contrary, what is clearly conceived can *help Change the world*. Your own world, to begin with, and the world at large, that we all share.

Examples of Definition Pages:
POIESIS  [POIESIS AND THE ARTIST can be found here:  https://laartinfomindtoolsforartandpoiesis.wordpress.com/2017/08/19/mindtools-poiesis-and-the-artist/  or as a shortlink:  http://wp.me/p8NZi6-17
ENTHUSIASM [This one already exists too at https://laartinfomindtoolsforartandpoiesis.wordpress.com/2017/06/04/mind-tools-channeling-our-higher-selves-ii/  or as a shortlink:  http://wp.me/p8NZi6-z ]
Many more to come, with time…

The Nature of Reality – Many people, indeed, the vast majority of human beings, live in the world of “Maya” – Illusion and Delusion. But the very instant you connect to Poiesis – Magic happens – as *you* attune to your (Higher) Self and the Universe, and so become a co-creator of the “reality” we live in.

And the very fact that *you* are an Artist, a Gallery Owner or Managing Executive, an Entrepreneur [*any* Entrepreneur is actually attuned to Poiesis, but this is of course particularly true for Art-related Entrepreneurs], an Art Collector, a Museum Executive with creative responsibilities,  *you have already taken a step that puts you apart*. This might sound like a bit of New-Age wishful thinking, and perhaps even like tentative exploration of lalaland… But in truth, it is not so! Not at all! The more you would (or will) study and understand Epistemology, Systems Theory, and cutting-edge Physics, the more you will understand that nothing is more REAL than this.

The material world is nothing but a perception, energy vibrating a certain way. Which, in turn, appears to us coagulated as matter, the solid stuff we can touch.  But truth is, “solid matter” is 99.9something % EMPTY SPACE, nothing more than a construct we perceive as we perceive it because we have learned to do so. We assemble it the way we do, and to that extent it is “real”, but we could assemble it differently. Which is in fact what “primitives” do.  Now, precisely, when we embrace Poiesis and become Artists and Creators, we have started a journey into *seeing things differently*. We took the first step toward creating a different world, and exploring different realities. As we *do so*, we begun the process of shackling off the chains woven by the programming of our minds and the”Forces Of Our Lives” and so become able to enter different realms. Doing so, starting the process of slowly remembering who and what we truly are…

However, in the material world, Output is function of Input: YOU ARE WHAT YOU BREATHE, DRINK AND EAT – We interface with this reality through our bodies and our minds, which are just interface tools our true Selves own and animate, and which are themselves the outcome of specific material inputs. Change the input, and you will change the output. Consequently, how we treat Body and Mind is of fundamental importance, even if the idea that all we are is just our body, or, for that matter, our mind, is hilariously ridiculous. So feeble-minded that it is truly mind-boggling that anyone using their brains at all can actually take such an idea seriously. Or, at least, pretend they do, because the agenda they serve compels them to do so.  Truth is, the body is just a piece of hardware, and the mind, a piece of software. To a large extent, social construct created to control us in the first place, and further dulled down by the “Forces Of Our Lives”.

* * * * *

Here are examples of issues for you to explore so to fine-tune “Input” and thus influence or control Output. When we will have the time we will prepare some “Guidance Notes” on these subjects, but in between, nothing forbids you to research them on your own:

“ATTUNING TO POIESIS, EMPOWERMENT and AWARENESS THROUGH CONTROL of our AIR, WATER, and FOOD INPUTS”.

“AWF [Air-Water-Food] QUALITY COMPELS ARTISTIC AND POIETIC OUTPUT”.

“WE ARE SYMBIOTS – The 3 POUNDS OF BACTERIA AND MICROORGANISMS THAT ARE OUR COMMENSALS ARE OUR MOST IMPORTANT ALLIES, SO TREAT THEM WELL = without them your body would be dead in a matter of days”.

“HOW TO EAT RIGHT REJECTING THE OLD FAT AND CHOLESTEROL LIE”.

*****

And here is one of the most insightful and downright brilliant quote we came across so far.  This is clearly someone who “gets it”, graps it, “groks” it:

“Artists need to create on the same scale  that  society has the capacity to destroy.”   – Lauren Bon

Artist, indeed, as some of the main carriers of Poiesis, are the key to respond to Entropy and the most negative aspects of “the Forces Of Our Lives”.
